Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, is used as an anti-aging therapy in postmenopausal women. For many patients, HRT is beneficial relieving symptoms of menopause, restoring quality of life and even improving health with age.

The goal of hormone replacement therapy is to help you feel as healthy as possible. Many people do not realize that the most common symptoms of aging are actually associated with fluctuating hormone levels. BHRT is a leading form of anti-aging therapy, and is one that has been proven very effective in reducing the symptoms of hormonal decline.

Here are a few of the top benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy:

  • Relieving menopausal symptoms - Estrogen can be used as an anti-aging therapy to alleviate symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, insomnia, moodiness, and sexual dysfunction.
  • Resisting cardiovascular disease - When menopausal symptoms are unbearable, anti-aging hormone replacement therapy done in early menopause may not only alleviate symptoms, but also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Fighting osteoporosis - Osteoporosis causes over half of all women that are over 50 years of age to fracture their wrist, hip, or back. Hormone replacement therapy has been shown to promote stronger bones, but should only be used if vitamin D, calcium, medications, or lifestyle changes are not effective or well-tolerated.
  • Reducing the risk of colorectal cancer - Menopausal women who take a combination of progestin and estrogen have a 37 percent reduced risk of developing colon cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Hormone replacement therapy may be beneficial in some women, but the benefits must be weighed against the risks. Women who have a history of blood clots, breast cancer, or heart disease should speak with Dr. Waller about any concerns they have with hormone replacement therapy prior to beginning treatment.
