Periactin and Its Effects
Periactin (Cyproheptadine hydrochloride) is an antagonist of histamine and serotonin receptors of the first generation. Usually, this medication is prescribed for curing the symptoms associated with allergies: hay fever, runny nose, eye irritation, urticaria and swelling. In addition, these pills are approved by the FDA as an acceptable medication for treatment of anaphylactic reactions, often as a supplement to injections of epinephrine. The unique action of this medication is the increase of appetite. It is caused by the effect on inhibition of serotonin.
Because of the ability of histamine and serotonin to enlarge the secretion of pancreatic juice, it was recommended to use Periactin as an additional medication in the treatment of chronic pancreatitis.
You should never start the treatment with Periactin without consulting your healthcare provider. A doctor should be notified about all the drugs that you use and all the symptoms and problems that you're having at the moment. Some of the health conditions are contraindicated with the active ingredients of Periactin, so using it without approval can be dangerous and lead to unexpected results.
Use during Pregnancy
The action category for fetus by FDA is B. You should immediately stop breastfeeding if there is a need to start treatment with Periactin.
