Periactin and Its Effects

Periactin (Cyproheptadine hydrochloride) is an antagonist of histamine and serotonin receptors of the first generation. Usually, this medication is prescribed for curing the symptoms associated with allergies: hay fever, runny nose, eye irritation, urticaria and swelling. In addition, these pills are approved by the FDA as an acceptable medication for treatment of anaphylactic reactions, often as a supplement to injections of epinephrine. The unique action of this medication is the increase of appetite. It is caused by the effect on inhibition of serotonin.

Because of the ability of histamine and serotonin to enlarge the secretion of pancreatic juice, it was recommended to use Periactin as an additional medication in the treatment of chronic pancreatitis.
